Alwar – The Hidden Gem of Rajasthan

The lesser known city of Rajasthan, Alwar is surrounded by lush green landscapes, Alwar is one of the perfect weekend getaway destination from Delhi/NCR region. It is connected to metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Bharatpur and Jaipur, making it easily accessible. The history of this destination can be traced back to 1500 BC where it was a princely state ruled by the Rajput kings. This lesser known destination is surely a gem with its various mesmerizing attractions. Here are some places to visit in Alwar:

City Palace

City Palace was built during the end of 17^th century. Also known as Vinay Vilas Mahal, this palace follows the Indo-Islamic architecture. It consists of many entry gates named Jai Pol, Suraj Pol, Laxman Pol, Chand Pol, Andheri Gate and Kishan Pol. A museum is situated on the upper floor of the Palace called The City Museum. There is also an open ground inside the palace, surrounded with Krishna temples from all sides. One of the highlightsof this palace is the golden Durbar hall which is going to be used as a court by the government.

Moosi Maharani Ki Chhatri

This monument was built by Maharaja VinaySingh and was dedicated to his father, Late Maharaja Bhaktawar Singh, one of the kings of Alwar. The tomb is made of sandstone following Rajputana architecture. Covering the tomb is a chhatri, which is made of marble and the interiors are embellished with mythological paintings.

Siliserh Lake

Siliserh Lake is one of the rejuvenating places to visit in Alwar. Established in the year 1845, this lake is spread across 7 kilometers. It was built by Maharaja Vinay Khan as the source of water supply for the people living in Alwar city. Offering pleasant breeze and beautiful views, this is one of the famous picnic spots.

Alwar Fort

Located at a height of 305 meters above the city, Alwar Fort carries a great historical significance with it. Built in the 16^th century,it is also known as Baba QilaFort. Built by Hasan Khan Mewati, the fort has six entrances named Chand Pol, Suraj Pol, Krishna Pol, Laxman Pol, Andheri Gate and Jai Pol. These gates are named after each ruler, depicting their stories with the walks that are carved with beautiful scriptures.

Company Garden

Located at the center of the city, Company Garden is a must visit place in Alwar. It is also known as Purjan Vihar. It was built during the rule of Maharaja Shiv Dan Singh in 1868. Since then, this garden has witnessed many changes and now contains a greenhouse as well.
