3 Most Magnificent Heritage Spots in Delhi

Delhi has a history older than, well, probably time itself. Having been around since the second millennium BC, the city has seen it all, from the invincible Pandavas and their epic Mahabharata, to the Maurya Dynasty and the Great King Ashoka, from Muhammad Ghori and the Afghan invasion, to Illtumish and his Turkish consolidation, from the arrival of the Lodhi Dynasty to the conquest of the Mughals’ by Babar and the last Mughal Emperor Bhadurshah Zafar. Delhi and its monuments have witnessed all this and more, standing tall then, as they are today, but perhaps just a little wary and fatigued with the passage of time.

History buffs still travel the lengths to rediscover Delhi’s journey and to walk down its culturally rich memory lane. If you are one of them, make sure you don’t miss out on checking some of the most popular heritage spots in the city. Some you might already have heard of and some might not be as famous, but amidst your jam packed itinerary do enlist these, for they are truly worth a dekho!

Tomb of Mirza Ghalib: Reminisce on the romance of poetry of the yesteryears with a visit to the Tomb of the great poet, Mirza Ghalib, where his soulful words still echo. Located right outside the courtyard of the Hazrat Nizamuddin’s Tomb, it’s time you put it right on the top of your ‘must-see’ list.

Chor Minar: This little known monument with a gory history hides in a small park at a roundabout in Hauz Khas. What makes Chor Minar unique and worth a visit is that the structure has 225 holes and according to the stories these holes were used to display the heads of the thieves to deter people from doing anything wrong.

Jahaz Mahal: Located next to Hauz-i-Shamsi, Jahaz Mahal was built in the Lodi era, the exact nature and purpose of the monument is unclear. While some say it served as an Inn (Sarai) meant for travellers while others believe it to have been a retreat of the Mughals. What we love the most about the structure is its appearance in the form of a ship.
